Visit of delegates from Brazilian universities

At the last seminar on New World Anthropology, held on Monday, March 16, we had the pleasure of welcoming delegates from Brazilian universities to the University of Warsaw as part of a visit organized by the Center for Andean Studies and the Polish section of the Explorers Club:

Dr. Marcio Fernandes – Media, criminology, representative of the rector of UNICENTRO;

Dr. Caroline Da Ros – Chemistry, representative of the rector of UFPR;

Dr. Antônio Cesar Bochenek – Law, Management Legal and Innovation Department of UEPG;

Dr. Fernanda Félix – Visual Arts, UNESPAR;

Dr. André Padial – Biology, Interdisciplinary Center for Science, Technology and Innovation, UFPR;

Dr. Maurício Camargo Filho – Geography, UNICENTRO.

The meeting, held in both Spanish and English, was dedicated to the presentation of their research proposals. In addition, the delegates visited, among other places, the Center for Biological and Chemical Sciences at the University of Warsaw and met with the Rector of the University of Warsaw, Professor Alojzy Nowak.

– in the first part, Dr. Julia Earle (University of Texas at Austin, visiting researcher at the Center for Andean Studies) will give a lecture entitled:

“Ceramic exchange in the early Inka heartland: Interaction networks and social capital before the formation of an empire (AD 1000-1400).”

We would like to expressly point out that an essential requirement for participating in the excavations is having a communicative level of Spanish.

Those who do not live in Warsaw and wish to participate in the online meeting (as well as those who cannot attend in person but are interested in participating in the excavations) can contact us by email: j.klaput@uw.edu.pl

The participant selection process will consist of the following phases:

1. Those interested in participating in the internships must fill out the application form (in Spanish) and send it to the address j.klaput@uw.edu.pl before March 10 this year.

2. Participation in the information meeting on the 10th of this month (see above).

3. Individual interview (conducted partly in Spanish), the date of which will be agreed upon with the participants at the meeting on the 10th of this month, at a time convenient for the candidates. The final list of selected participants will be announced on March 30th of this year.

Presentation "LiDaR documentation in Andean archaeology"

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Mariusz Ziolkowski, director of the Andean Studies Center at the University of Warsaw, will present the paper entitled “LiDaR documentation in Andean archaeology: some examples and application proposals” within the framework of the International Seminar “The Americas today: cultures, technologies and innovation” on February 26 at the Pontifical Bolivarian University (Medellín, Colombia).

In memoriam
Dr. Kacper Świerk (1976 – 2026)

A few days ago we said goodbye, with deep sorrow, to our dear friend and colleague, Dr. Kacper Świerk, who passed away on January 19, 2026 in Rzeszów (Poland), his hometown, where he was born on June 4, 1976.

She completed her university studies at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, where she obtained a Bachelor's degree (1998) and graduated with a Master's degree (2001) in ethnology and cultural anthropology. She dedicated her entire career to the study of the role that animals play in Amerindian cultures and cosmologies.

After completing her studies, she began her field research in the Peruvian Amazon. She became deeply involved with the Matsigenka people, to whom she dedicated her doctoral thesis “Transformations of the sociocultural situation of newly contacted indigenous groups in the Amazon: the case of the Matsigenka of the Paquiría River (Eastern Peru) in comparison with the Matsigenka of the Lower Urubamba who maintain permanent contact with national society” (2007) under the direction of Professor Aleksander Posern-Zieliński, a renowned Polish Americanist.

Seminar on New World Anthropology: Slovak Research on the Maya

Results of the Call for Applications for the “Dr. Maria Rostworowski de Diez Canseco Research Grant in Inca Studies for Master's and Doctoral Programs” for 2026

On November 7th of this year 2025, in an online session of the Committee “Doctor Maria Rostworowski de Diez Canseco Research Scholarship, in Inca studies for master's and doctoral degrees”, awarded by the Center for Andean Studies of the University of Warsaw (CEAC) thanks to the funding of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland, the members of the Jury met, headed by Prof. Dr. Mariusz Ziółkowski, Executive President.

After analyzing the different applications and having concluded a deliberation on them, the Committee proceeded to cast its vote publicly, obtaining the majority of the votes, which declares the applicant Miss as the winner of the scholarship for the period 2026. María Eugenia Zamora Melo (student enrolled in the third year of the Master's Degree in Historical Archaeological Studies, University of Buenos Aires), with her research project: “Revisiting the Kallankas: Public Spaces in Pueblo Viejo de Bellavista and Chuya (Santa Eulalia Valley, Huarochirí, Peru) during the 15th-16th Centuries”, advised by Dr. José María Vaquer of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

New World Anthropology Seminar 13.10: Results of the Sacsayhuamán 2025 Project

Research scholarship in Inca studies, for master's and doctorate, awarded by the Center for Andean Studies of the University of Warsaw (CEAC) thanks to funding from the Ministry of Science and Higher Studies of Poland.

Having successfully concluded the Second Call for Applications for the 2025 Fellowship, with the selection of the Fellow in the person of Ms. Audrey Lair, we are pleased to announce this Third Call for Applications, for the year 2026. The deadline for submitting applications is September 30, 2025, at midnight Lima time. The results will be announced on October 24, 00. The beneficiary of the 15 scholarship will be able to begin their research work as early as January 2025, 2026, but no later than September 2, 2026.

Presentation "40 Years of South American Archaeology at the University of Helsinki"

We invite you to participate in the upcoming New World Anthropology Seminar, which will be held on Monday, March 7, at 16:45 p.m. at the UV Center for Andean Studies.

Dr. Antti Korpisaari (University of Helsinki) will present the paper "40 years of South American archaeology at the University of Helsinki, Finland, with special emphasis on research related to the Tiwanaku culture. "

The first part of the presentation provides an overview of the research conducted by the University of Helsinki in South America, especially in Bolivia, since the 1980s. The presenter, Antti Korpisaari, joined this research in 1998, specializing in the study of the Tiwanaku culture (ca. 600–1050 AD). In the final part of the presentation, Korpisaari's own research will be discussed in more detail, specifically at the sites of Tiraska and Pariti in the Lake Titicaca region of Bolivia.

Seminar on Polish research in Mesoamerica

On Monday, March 10, a meeting of the Seminar on New World Anthropology was held at the UV's Center for Andean Studies.

As part of the seminar, Dr. Michał Gilewski (CEAC UV) presented a paper:

„Czy Majowie lubią metale ziem rzadkich? Wyniki badań geochemicznych na stanowisku Tak'alik Ab'aj” ("Do the Maya like rare earth metals? Results of geochemical research at the Tak'alik Ab'aj site") dedicated to research conducted at the Tak'alik Ab'aj site in cooperation with the Tak'alik Ab'aj National Archaeological Park.

In the second part, Prof. Jarosław Źrałka (Institute of Archaeology, Jagiellonian University) presented his research on the murals from Chajul (Guatemala), which his team has documented, and the work of Polish conservators in the region.

Cusco in the Viceregal Period: Archival Sources in Art History Research

Within the framework of the New World Anthropology Seminar meeting, held on March 24 at the UV Center for Andean Studies, Dr. Ewa Kubiak (University of Łódź) presented the paper:

"Cusco okresu Wicekrólestwa. Źródła archiwalne w badaniach z historii sztuki. Część pierwsza" (“Cusco in the Viceregal Period. Archival Sources in Art History Research. Part One”)

dedicated to her research on colonial art in Cusco.

New article in Radiocarbon magazine

Article “Possibilities and limitations of new radiocarbon dating for the Maucallacta site, dep. Arequipa, Peru has been published in the latest issue of Radiocarbon magazine.

The article, resulting from collaboration between the Centre for Andean Studies at the University of Warsaw, the Silesian University of Technology and other institutions, deals with new radiocarbon dating of the Maucallacta-Pampacolca site, related to the Inca cult of the Coropuna volcano.

New publication about capacocha in Chachani and Pichu Pichu

We are pleased to announce that the article “Inca human sacrifice and sacred pilgrimages: spatial analysis of sites on the Chachani and Pichu Pichu volcanoes” by Dr. Dagmara Socha and Dr. Dominika Sieczkowska-Jacyna has just been published in Antiquity. Visit of representatives of the University of Warsaw to Peruvian universities

Representatives of the University of Warsaw visited the Peruvian partner universities. During the visit, the areas of cooperation were expanded and the Rector of the UW, Professor Alojzy Z. Nowak, received the Medal of the Catholic University of Santa Maria de Arequipa. The delegation of the University also visited the Center for Andean Studies of the UV, which has two locations in Peru: in Arequipa and in Cusco.

The objective of the trip was to expand cooperation with two Peruvian universities: Universidad Católica de Santa María de Arequipa (UCSM) and Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco (UNSAAC).

The UV delegation discussed the results of the research work carried out so far, mainly in the fields of archaeology and analytical chemistry, with the authorities of the UCSM, including the rector Dr. Manuel Alberto Briceño Ortega. The possibility of UV support for the launch of a specialization in artificial intelligence at the UCSM was also raised. In conversation with the rector of UNSAAC, Dr. Eleazar Crucinta Ugarte, and a delegation of specialists involved in joint projects between the university and the UV, the participants in the meeting confirmed the importance of international cooperation in the academic and scientific fields.

The trip to Peru was attended by the Rector of the UV, Prof. Alojzy Nowak, the Vice-Rector for Research of the UV, Prof. Zygmunt Lalak, the Director of the Center for Biological and Chemical Sciences of the UV, Prof. Ewa Bulska, and the Director of the Center for Andean Studies of the UV, Prof. Mariusz Ziółkowski.

On September 26, 2024, a new book “What Belongs to the Divinities” by Dr. Sylwia Siemianowska about the pottery of capacocha sacrifices from Ampato and Misti volcanoes was presented. The presentation was accompanied by the opening of an exhibition at the Andean Sanctuaries Museum in Arequipa.

Ceramology course in Arequipa

From October 14 to 18, Dr. Sylwia Siemianowska had the opportunity to teach a course on ceramology and glasswork at the Museo Santuarios Andinos in Arequipa, part of the UCSM. It was titled:

New inter-institutional cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Culture Cusco

The article deals with the conclusions of the research, which was published in the December 2022 issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science entitled: “Use of psychoactive and stimulant plants on the south coast of Peru from the Early Intermediate to Late Intermediate Period ”. 


New scientific station of the University of Warsaw in Vietnam

On the second day of the “New Opening” scientific conference, a ceremony was held to officially open the Polish-Vietnamese Tropical Research Station (PWTSB), located in Hanoi, Vietnam, at the headquarters of the Vietnamese Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (VIGMR). ).

The head of the team from the University of Warsaw and the Polish Academy of Sciences for the installation of the station in Vietnam is the director of the CEAC. During the conference, CEAC employees gave presentations on the archeology of the Andes and the activities of the Polish scientific stations in Peru.

A new book by Dr Ewa Kubiak “Looking at colonial art. Jesuit architecture and art in the Viceroyalty of Peru.»

Dr Ewa Kubiak is an associate researcher at the Center for Andean Studies at the University of Warsaw in Cusco and works at Uniwersytet Łódzki.

The objective of the work has been to offer an innovative and expanded look at the art and architecture of the Jesuit order in the Viceroyalty of Peru carried out from three different perspectives, which also included a comparative analysis of certain architectural forms and artistic phenomena.

Workshop «Methods of analysis and cognitive possibilities of ceramics and glass in archaeological context»

From October 25 to 31, 2023, a Course was held (hybrid modality) taught by Dr. Sylwia Siemianowska from the Center for Andean Studies of the University of Warsaw in Cusco. This course had students from various specialties and nationalities, who expanded their knowledge regarding ceramics and glass, found in archaeological context.

Reconstruction of the face of the Lady of Ampato

On October 24, the exhibition “Capacocha, following the Inca Divinities” was inaugurated, which summarizes the last five years of collaboration between the UW Center for Andean Studies and the Santa María Catholic University of Arequipa. At the event, a reconstruction of the face of the Lady of Ampato, found on the slopes of Ampato 28 years ago, was also exhibited for the first time.

Appointment Ceremony as Honorary Professors to Doctors Dominika Sieczkowska-Jacyna and Dagmara Socha

On November 6, the ceremony to appoint Dr. Dominika Sieczkowska-Jacyna and Dr. Dagmara Socha from the Center for Andean Studies of the University of Warsaw as Honorary Professors of the Catholic University of Santa María in Arequipa (Peru) took place.

In the same ceremony, the appointment of the Honoris Causa Doctor to Dr. Johan Reinhard, the outstanding researcher and discoverer of the Maid of Ampato, took place.

Starting on October 24, you can visit the exhibition “CAPACOCHA, FOLLOWING THE INCA DIVINITIES”. The exhibition aims to present the latest results of research carried out within the framework of collaboration between the Center for Andean Studies of the University of Warsaw and the Catholic University of Santa María, Arequipa. A facial reconstruction of the Lady of Ampato will be presented for the first time, made with the latest facial reconstruction techniques.

Workshop «Methods of analysis and cognitive possibilities of ceramics and glass in archaeological context»

I participated in a workshop on ceramic analysis of artifacts from archaeological contexts. Dr. Sylwia Siemianowska, from the Polish Academy of Sciences, affiliated with the Center for Andean Studies of the UV, will lead the training workshop within the framework of the collaboration between the CEAC and the Catholic University of Santa María de Arequipa. The course is free and is aimed at anyone interested in pre-Columbian ceramics. For more details, see the poster below. 

Meeting of the CEAC and UCSM authorities

On October 18, a delegation from the Center for Andean Studies of the UV met in the city of Arequipa with the Rector of the Catholic University of Santa María, Dr. Manuel Alberto Briceño Ortega.

The delegation's visit was part of a series of working meetings within the framework of close collaboration between UCSM and the University of Warsaw. During the meeting, topics related to cooperation in research, teaching and scientific dissemination were discussed.

New article by a Polish team published in Archaeometry magazine

A new article on the research of a Polish-Peruvian team has just been published in the journal Archaeometry. The research concerns the measurement systems used by the Inca builders at Chachabamba and Machu Picchu sites, in the Machupicchu National Archaeological Park. It is the result of a collaboration carried out in the framework of an agreement between the Center for Andean Studies of the UW and the Dirección Desconcentrada de Cultura Cusco.

A presentation of the book 'Machu Picchu in Context', which is a summary of Polish-Italian-Peruvian research in the Machu Picchu area, took place on December 15 at the UW Senate Hall in the Kazimierzowski Palace.

Signing of the Cooperation Agreement between DDC Cusco and CEA UW

On November 15, 2022, in the city of Cusco, an international Cooperation Agreement was signed for the continuation of research between the Desconcentrada de Cultura Cusco of the Ministry of Culture of Peru and the Center for Andean Studies of the University of Warsaw to promote archaeological research in the National Archaeological Park of Machupicchu. The Peruvian side was represented by the Director of DDC Cusco, Dr. Mildred Fernández Palomino, and on the Polish side by the Director of CEA UW, Dr. Mariusz Ziolkowski. We are very pleased that our long-standing collaboration can continue and that we can work together on new research projects.

New publication on research in Machupicchu

We are pleased to share with you our new publication on research in the Machupicchu National Archaeological Park. The monograph is the result of years of work of a Polish-Italian-Peruvian research team in the Machupicchu llaqta and the whole National Park. One of the editors of the publication is the Director of the Center for Andean Studies - prof. dr hab. Mariusz Ziółkowski. 

Title of Honorary Professor of the Catholic University of Santa Maria for Director of the Center for Andean Studies of the University of Warsaw

On August 4 of this year, in a ceremony at the MUSA - Museo Santuarios Andinos of the UCSM in Arequipa, our Director, Professor Mariusz Ziółkowski was appointed Honorary Professor of the Catholic University of Santa Maria.

The new article «Ritual drug use during Inca human sacrifices on Ampato mountain (Peru): Results of a toxicological analysis»

The new article on toxicological studies of Inca human sacrifices has been published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports. The investigation was carried out in cooperation between the Center for Andean Studies of the University of Warsaw, the Catholic University of Santa María in Arequipa, and the Department of Forensic Medicine of the Collegium Medicum of the Nicolaus Copernicus University.

Researchers from the Center for Andean Studies explore the Machu Picchu area

Researchers from the Silesian University of Technology and archaeologists from the Center for Andean Studies at the University of Warsaw are participating in an international investigation of the Machu Picchu area in Peru. The current project, led by Dr. Andrzej Rakowski, from the Institute of Physics - CND, consists of establishing the chronology of the Inca conquest in the Vilcabamba Cordillera area.

Cooperation between the Center for Andean Studies of the University of Warsaw and the National University of San Antonio Abad of Cusco
