Research scholarship in Inca studies, for master's and doctorate, awarded by the Center for Andean Studies of the University of Warsaw (CEAC) thanks to funding from the Ministry of Science and Higher Studies of Poland

Outstanding Peruvian researcher, with a Polish father and a Puno mother. His contributions to Peruvian historiography and history through his research are multiple, in particular his studies on the Inca culture stand out, published in such well-known studies as “Pachacútec Inca Yupanqui” (1953), “Pre-Hispanic Peruvian Coast” (1977), “ Renewable natural resources and fishing in Peru, 1981th and 1983th centuries” (1988), “Andean Structures of Power. Religious and political ideology” (1534), “History of Tahuantinsuyu” (1598), “Doña Francisca Pizarro: an illustrious mestiza (1994-XNUMX)” (XNUMX) and several others, translated into several languages.

He was a full member of the National Academy of History of Peru, a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of History (Spain) and the National Academy of History (Argentine Republic). He belonged to the Raúl Porras Barrenechea Institute (Lima) and the Institute of Andean Studies (Berkeley, California). The Geographical Society of Lima incorporated her as an honorary member of it. She chaired the Peruvian Association of Ethnohistory. To carry out her research projects, she received support from the Wenner-Gren, Ford, Guggenheim and Volkswagen foundations, Fomciencias and Concytec.

She was also director of the National Museum of History and researcher at the Museum of Peruvian Culture.

Maria Rostworowski received recognitions and decorations including: Order of the Sun of Peru, in the rank of commander, Order of the Magisterial Palms, in the rank of Amauta, Howard F. Cline Award for American History / Honorable Mention, ' Sigillo D'Oro' from the International Center of Ethnohistory (Palermo-Italy), Southern-Peru Prize (2001) and José de la Riva-Agüero y Osma Medal for human creativity, awarded by the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, the Honorary doctorate Cause awarded by: Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (1996), National University of San Agustín de Arequipa (1991), Women's University of the Sacred Heart (1996), National University of Trujillo (1997), National University of San Marcos (2008) ; Honorary Professor of the Catholic University of Santa María de Arequipa (1996).

In her second homeland, Poland, among other distinctions, she was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Polish Order of Merit. In 2010, the University of Warsaw awarded him a doctorate. Honorary. The scholarship, established by the latter house of studies, is another form of recognition of the work of this outstanding Peruvian-Polish researcher.

Regulations of the Research Scholarship in Inca Studies for Master's and Doctorate "Doctora Maria Rostworowski de Diez Canseco"

  1. The scholarship is awarded for research work on Inca culture. It includes the areas of history, anthropology, archaeology, art history, and linguistics. It is intended for applicants who are in the process of preparing a master's or doctoral thesis on the Inca culture. The proposal is not aimed at people who have already completed their doctoral studies.
  2. The scholarship consists of support for the scholarship recipient's research work for a period of 6 months, preferably in Peru. The scholarship includes free accommodation in two homes available to the CEAC in the cities of Cusco and Arequipa (the scholarship recipient can use both facilities, with prior agreement of the CEAC Board of Directors), the right to use the office and laboratory spaces and the equipment. CEAC scientist in these two cities as well as financial support for a total of US$ 6000 (six thousand US dollars).

The Catholic University of Santa María de Arequipa will provide accommodation in Arequipa, after coordination with the CEAC and access to the facilities of the Andean Sanctuaries Museum, including the archaeological cabinet.   

  • The scholarship can also be used in other countries that were part of Tahuantinsuyu, namely Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile, or in countries where materials and collections relevant to the study of Inca culture are found. However, in such cases, support for the scholarship recipient would be limited to the subsidy fee of US$6 (six thousand US dollars) for the entire period of research work. The scholarship does not include support for accommodation in locations other than Cusco and Arequipa.
  • Only one scholarship is offered per year and it is not renewable. Applicants for the scholarship must present a certificate of academic affiliation in master's or doctoral studies with a specialization in Inca studies and a letter of recommendation from their thesis/dissertation director. In exceptional cases, applications from independent researchers may be considered, as long as they already have a bachelor's or master's degree.
  • There is no restriction regarding the country of origin of the candidates but the final works must be presented in Spanish.
  • The scholarship is for 6 months, counting from the day the scholarship recipient enters the country where they will carry out their research work.
  • The duration of the scholarship may be extended for a period to be agreed upon by the Committee. But in such case the support to the Beneficiary will be limited to accommodation in Cusco and/or Arequipa and access to the CEAC infrastructure, an additional financial contribution will not be contemplated.
  • The call for the scholarship will usually be between the months of June/July of each year, to begin research work from January of the following year.

  • At the end of the research work period, the Scholarship Holder must present a report to the Scholarship Committee and the CEAC.
  • In all subsequent publications based on studies carried out within the framework of the scholarship, the Scholar agrees to acknowledge having been supported in his or her work by the scholarship.

Applicants for the Scholarship must present the forms duly completed and signed attachments, as well as a letter of introduction from the tutor professor who will direct the research with the commitment to monitor it for the duration of the scholarship.
